Subject:
Stop the starving of Gaza
I am writing to you as a constituent to ask for your urgent support in calling on the Foreign Secretary to step up efforts to end the use of starvation as a weapon of war by the Israeli military in Gaza. Famine is taking hold in the north of Gaza and children are already dying of starvation: - As of mid-March at least 23 children have already died, with that figure expected to rise precipitously in the coming weeks as one in three children under two years old in northern Gaza are now acutely malnourished. - In addition to declaring imminent famine in the north of Gaza, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report, published on 18 March, also stated that half of the population across Gaza now faces catastrophic levels of hunger, meaning people are starving and at risk of acute malnutrition and death. - The UN has warned that the decline in the population’s nutrition status was at an unprecedented rate; people in Gaza are being starved at the fastest rate that the world has ever seen. - 90% of children under five in Gaza are suffering from an infectious disease, so often aggravated by malnutrition. - 58,000 additional deaths are projected in Gaza over the next six months if there is no ceasefire. Humanitarian organisations have been warning for months that this would be the result of the ‘total closure’ of Gaza declared by the Israeli government on 9 October 2023. Shockingly, despite reports of deadly malnutrition and despite demands by the International Court of Justice that Israel enable the provision of humanitarian assistance and basic services to those who need it in Gaza, Israeli forces have continued to massively restrict deliveries of lifesaving aid and rejected calls to open up all available land crossings. Recent initiatives such as airdrops, and temporary seaports are not realistic or lasting solutions to stave off a famine and sustain life. People in Gaza need aid now, not in a few weeks once a makeshift port has been built, and they need at least 500 trucks of supplies a day. I ask that you write urgently to the Foreign Secretary calling for the UK Government to take the following actions: - Work urgently to establish an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza as the only sustainable way to stem the tide of malnutrition in Gaza at scale. - Publicly call on Israel to meet its obligations under International Humanitarian Law and lift its total closure of Gaza, reopen its crossings, including the Karni and Erez crossings in the north and allow the safe and unimpeded movement of humanitarian aid (including fuel, food and medical supplies) and aid workers, medical personnel and sick and wounded people. - Publicly call on Israel to also reactivate essential services in Gaza, including restoring cross-border water supply pipelines and electricity, resuming commercial goods traffic, and restarting domestic production of fresh, nutritious foods. Increased humanitarian aid alone will not fend off famine, commercial trade should be re-established to pre-October levels. - Massively upscale aid responses to the humanitarian crisis and allocate additional funding for immediate to long-term needs, aiming for the early restoration of agrifood systems, including agriculture, livestock, and fishing. - Demand that Israel complies with international humanitarian law and ensure there are meaningful consequences for using starvation as a weapon of war by supporting accountability for perpetrators through independent mechanisms. I also ask that you raise these issues with your party leadership, and urge them to articulate clear opposition to Israel’s serious violations of international law against Palestinians, and call for accountability, the urgent protection of civilians, and humanitarian access. I hope you will take swift action to address these issues and look forward to hearing from you soon.
