Staff at Al Aqsa Hospital, the largest still-functioning hospital in Gaza’s Middle Area, have been forced to evacuate because of increasing Israeli military attacks in the vicinity. This includes our own Emergency Medical Team, who were forced to suspend their work at the hospital in the first week of January and return to the UK.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military has dropped leaflets ordering civilians to move south – a chilling echo of the days before their November 2023 raid on Al Shifa Hospital in the north of Gaza.

Evacuation orders and bombardment around the Nasser and European hospitals in Khan Younis also put their vital services at critical risk.

Now, as then, an evacuation of Al-Aqsa Hospital – or any other – would be a death sentence for patients and wounded people, including babies and children.

MAP is calling on our leaders in the UK to immediately intervene to prevent this catastrophe from getting worse.

FOREIGN SECRETARY DAVID CAMERON MUST:

Pressure the UK Prime Minister to call his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu to demand the Israeli military deconflicts Gaza’s hospitals, that it guarantees the safety of all staff, patients and displaced people inside, and that it guarantees access to and from health facilities.
Immediately issue a statement opposing, in the strongest terms, attempts by the Israeli military to force the closure of Al-Aqsa Hospital or any healthcare facilities in Gaza, which are protected under international law.
Publicly call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, as the only way to protect civilians and prevent the total collapse of healthcare in Gaza.

Please email your MP today asking them to write to the Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, demanding action to uphold international humanitarian law and to save Gaza’s hospitals.

The Israeli military’s indiscriminate bombardment and expanding ground invasion are once again threatening to force the closure of vital hospitals in Gaza, just as they are needed more than ever.

Most staff at Al Aqsa Hospital, the largest still-functioning hospital in Gaza’s Middle Area, have been forced to flee and are unable to safely look after the hundreds of patients remaining there because of increasing Israeli military activity in the vicinity.

At the Nasser Hospital, the largest hospital in the south of Gaza, no one can enter or exit due to the ongoing Israeli bombardment, with doctors reporting that there are now less than 10% of staff left. The WHO reports that staff are digging graves on hospital grounds.

The European Gaza Hospital, the second largest hospital in the south, is also unreachable by staff and patients according to Doctors Without Borders.

Al-Kheir Hospital is no longer operational due to extensive damage. Several health workers have been detained amid an Israeli military incursion.

Al-Amal Hospital’s surgical ward ceased operations on 29 January, while the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) reports that eight days of siege and shelling nearby have prevented ambulances from reaching casualties. PRCS teams report that Israeli tanks are now stationed in the hospital’s grounds, firing live ammunition and smoke grenades at PRCS staff and internally displaced people seeking shelter at the hospital.

The Israeli military has repeatedly dropped leaflets designating the areas surrounding hospitals as ‘red zones’ and ordering civilians to move south, echoing the days before the Israeli raid on Al-Shifa Hospital in the north of Gaza. Now as then, any evacuation of these hospitals would be a death sentence for thousands of patients, including babies and children.

I hope you will write to the Foreign Secretary demanding action to uphold international humanitarian law and to save Gaza’s hospitals. The Foreign Secretary should:

- Ensure the UK Prime Minister calls his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, and demands that the Israeli military upholds the protection of Gaza’s hospitals and guarantees the safety of all staff, patients and displaced people inside, and access to and from health facilities.

- Immediately issue a statement opposing, in the strongest terms, any actions by the Israeli military to force the closure of healthcare facilities in Gaza, which are protected under international law.

- Publicly call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, as the only way to protect civilians and prevent the total collapse of healthcare in Gaza.

The government has repeatedly stated that it expects the Israeli military to uphold the laws of war. Gaza’s remaining major hospitals are in immediate danger of forcible closure. From north to south, Israel is systematically dismantling Gaza’s health system.

It is vital that immediate and decisive action is taken when it is clear that such calls are being ignored.
