Northern Gaza under siege – Tell your MP we will not stay silent while Gaza is erased

I am writing today regarding Israel’s intensifying military attacks and tightening siege that is threatening to erase the Palestinian presence in northern Gaza, and the findings of a UN independent inquiry that Israel is perpetrating war crimes and the crime of extermination in Gaza.

We are witnessing the most horrific of nightmares unfold. Trapped. Starved. Bombed. Surrounded by Israeli forces, with many of those who try to flee being shot at. Palestinians in North Gaza are living under a suffocating siege. Children are being bombed while they play on street corners. In central Gaza, people are being burnt alive in tents that were made to protect them. The UK must act urgently to protect Palestinians from extermination in Gaza.

I am deeply concerned that air and ground strikes on northern Gaza are increasing amid Israel’s effort to displace the 400,000 people that remain there. International law is being ignored as refugee camps and hospitals are bombed, and civilians left dead in the streets. Essential aid supplies have been blocked since 1 October, with families starving and children left orphaned.

While Palestinian survival in northern Gaza is becoming impossible, the so-called designated ‘humanitarian zone’ in the south, between al-Mawasi and Deir al-Balah, where more than one million people are already living in inhumane conditions, remains unsafe for both civilians and aid workers, as Israeli forces continue to target the area repeatedly. According to the UN’s Humanitarian Coordinator in Gaza, there are no more supplies available in Gaza to support newly displaced people.

The Israeli military’s attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, including healthcare workers and facilities, and suffocating siege are dismantling the fabric of society in Gaza. The Israeli military has killed over 42,000 Palestinians and injured more than 99,000 during a year-long military offensive.

On 10 October, an independent UN Commission of Inquiry found that Israel has perpetrated a concerted policy to destroy Gaza’s health system, and committed war crimes and the crime against humanity of extermination during its assault on Gaza. Independent UN human rights experts and the International Court of Justice have concluded that Israel’s actions may plausibly amount to genocide. There can be no ‘business as usual’ after such stark conclusions.

The UK government has repeatedly expressed its concern over civilian casualties in Gaza, and called for international law to be upheld. But these statements have been ignored, and it has failed to condemn Israel’s atrocities. The UK must go beyond words of concern, and take decisive action to end all complicity in these atrocities and ensure those responsible are held accountable. It must act urgently to protect Palestinians from extermination in Gaza by ending all arms sales to Israel.

As my elected official, I call on you to raise the following points in Parliament, as well as raising awareness of the plight of Palestinians in Gaza in your communications and social media activity.

- Urge the UK Government to recognise and publicly condemn Israel’s violations of international law in Gaza, including the findings of the UN Commission of Inquiry that Israel is committing war crimes and the crime against humanity of extermination, and commit to implementing the recommendations of the Commission’s report.

- Urge the UK Government to suspend all arms export licences and transfers to Israel.

- Urge the UK Government to demand that Israel cease all attacks on civilians and civilian objects, rescind its forced displacement orders in North Gaza - which includes three hospitals - and hold Israel accountable for its actions.

Recently, the UK Government has taken a degree of action. This includes the resumption of United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) funding; respecting the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court; and partially suspending arms export licences to Israel.

This action has come not only from campaigns but directly as a result of pressure from MPs. Please do all you can to ensure the UK government takes further action to stop the erasure of the Palestinian presence in northern Gaza.
