Support accountability for violence against Gaza protesters
I am writing to express my serious concern about the recent killing and injuring of Palestinian protesters in Gaza. Since 30 March, at least 102 Palestinians, including 12 children, have been killed during the course of the ‘Great March of Return’ demonstrations and more than 12,271 injured by Israeli forces. Out of the injured 6,760 were transferred to hospital for treatment, including 3,598 (53 %) with gunshot wounds. Gaza’s hospitals, already struggling under a decade of blockade and closure, with longstanding shortages of medical supplies, electricity and fuel, are overwhelmed by the mass casualties. These casualties resulted from a violent response by Israeli forces, including the use of live ammunition, rubber bullets and tear gas, to mass peaceful protests along the border, as Palestinian refugees demand the realisation of their right to return, as enshrined in international law. On Monday 14 May one Israeli soldier was lightly wounded and taken to hospital for treatment, the first Israeli casualty reported to date. There does not appear to have been any threat to them or to others that could have justified the widespread use of lethal and other excessive force. UN Secretary General António Guterres has called for an “independent and transparent investigation” into the killing and injuring of Palestinians. This call was echoed by the European Union’s Foreign Affairs representative, Federica Mogherini, who said “the use of live ammunition should, in particular, be part of an independent and transparent investigation.” I urge you to call on the UK Government to: •Support and actively work toward credible, independent investigation into Israel’s use of force against protesters in Gaza and ensure that suspected wrongdoers are held to account; •Provide immediate support to Gaza’s health system, which is fast running out of supplies to treat the wounded; •Demand an end to Israel’s 11-year closure and blockade of Gaza; and •Make a public statement which re-iterates the relevant international law with regards to the situation in Gaza I hope you will move forward on this matter swiftly and I look forward to hearing back from you.
