Subject:
A band-aid won’t heal Gaza’s wounds: UK must address root causes of health crisis
I am writing as a constituent to ask you to urge the UK Government to address Gaza’s ongoing health crisis. During Israel’s military offensive on Gaza in May 2021, 261 Palestinians were killed, including 67 children, and more than 2,200 injured. Israel’s bombardment damaged 33 healthcare centres – including Gaza’s only COVID-19 testing laboratory – and killed two doctors and a psychologist. One year on, reconstruction and recovery remain glacially slow, with two million Palestinians still locked behind Israel’s illegal closure and blockade. Health and humanitarian needs remain stark, with severe shortages to 39% of essential medicines, 63% of people dependent on international aid, and patients routinely prevented from travelling out of Gaza for the treatment they need. In 2016, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stated that “The closure of Gaza … is a collective punishment for which there must be accountability.” Fifteen years since the blockade began, impunity continues to reign. Repeated attacks on Palestinian health workers and facilities have been a persistent feature of Israel’s military assaults on Gaza. These, too, are fuelled by chronic impunity. International action is urgently needed to address the root causes of Gaza’s perpetual crisis, ensure a just and effective recovery, and alleviate the possibility for a return to violence. I therefore ask that you write urgently to UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss to call on her to take the following actions: 1) Demand that Israel end its illegal closure and blockade of Gaza, and all other policies that fragment and discriminate against the Palestinian people; 2) Call for a permanent end to attacks on Palestinian healthcare workers and facilities at the UN Security Council open debate on the protection of civilians on armed conflict, on 25 May 3) Reverse cuts to UK aid to the Palestinian people, and place the principles of sustainable development and self-determination at the heart of the UK’s aid policies in Gaza 4) Publicly support genuine investigations into, and legal accountability for, violations of international law that undermine Palestinian health and dignity, including through the International Criminal Court and the UN independent Commission of Inquiry established by the Human Rights Council in May 2021. I also urge you to seek other opportunities to raise these issues in parliament and beyond, including through questions, debates, and speaking out through social media.
